Nancy Moore Lanik, age 72, a native of Hopewell, Virginia, died Saturday July 5, 2008 at Southside Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Harry F. Moore and her mother and stepfather, Thelma Conway McCutchan and John N. McCutchan, two sons, Michael J. and Faison Conway Savage and her step daughter, Laura Waage. She is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas C. Lanik, her son, James N. Savage of Richmond, her stepdaughter, Lyn L. Patterson( Jeff) of Houston, Texas, grandchildren, Nelson Savage and Lauren Savage of Hopewell, Alexandra and Caroline Patterson, Houston, Texas, daughter in law, Valerie B. Savage of Hopewell, five sisters, Lillian M. Holden(Dr.B.Glenn) of Petersburg, Jane M. Eliades, of Chesterfield, Martha M. Faison(James), Rachel M. Childs,(Stanley)and Elizabeth M. Amick, all of Prince George and one brother, John N. McCutchan(Paula) of Hopewell, 16 nieces and nephews, 28 great nieces and nephews, one great great nephew, brother in law Robert H. Lanik of Alamogordo, New Mexico, three God children, Patrick Anderson of Hopewell, Mary C. Forbes, and Nicholas McDowall of Prince George. Born and reared in Hopewell, she graduated from Hopewell High School, moved to Richmond and attended Richmond Professional Institute (VCU) and in later years attended Richard Bland College. She was employed by Life of Virginia Insurance Company and lived in a boarding house owned by â??Popâ? and Grace Baldwin. A book written by Mrs. Baldwin entitled â??Come Live with Meâ? includes a humorous story about Nancy and her encouragement to one of the girls living there. After returning to Hopewell, she opened Carter House Antiques and became a knowledgeable and much respected antique dealer in the Metropolitan area. On the light side she was a favorite â??Auntieâ? Nancy to her many nieces and nephews and will always be remembered for having taught them how to lay eggs. Her love of travel took her many times to Europe with her family members and of late many, many sister trips stateside in the United States and Hawaii. Her adorable one of a kind Christmas stockings are cherished by those who received them and they adorn many homes at Christmas time. A butterfly in spirit, it was only fitting that she collected anything and everything relating to butterflies. In 1977, she and Tom moved to San Antonio, Texas and from there she followed Tom to Iran where he was employed with the Department of Defense. Fortunately, they were safely evacuated when the Shah was dethroned. They returned to San Antonio, where she was employed as manager of Frost Brothers Department Store until Tomâ??s employment relocated them to Sacramento, California. When Tom retired in 1992, they returned to her beloved home place in City Point where she remained until her death. In Hopewell, she volunteered her services to the Sexual Assault Outreach Program and was a volunteer as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Her love of the Rivah House and growing oysters made for many relaxed end enjoyable weekends at their home in Piankitank Shores. She was a member of the Tidewater Oyster Growers Association (TOGA), the Womenâ??s Club of Hopewell, and a member of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church and was a loyal supporter of other civic and church groups of which she gave generously in contributions and in volunteering her time and efforts. In 2007, she was diagnosed with cancer and had just celebrated her â??one year cancer freeâ? anniversary in June. She was a friend to everyone who knew her and was loved by all. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service Wednesday July 9 at 7:00 PM with visitation to follow the service.
