Oather Oakey Mitchell III, 89 of Chester, VA, died peacefully September 2, 2024. A lifetime resident of Chester, VA, he was the son of the late Oather Oakey Mitchell II and Kathryn Helen Cox. He attended St. Joseph Catholic and Thomas Dale High Schools. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. After losing his father at the age of 15, he devoted his life to serving and caring for his family and community. He served his beloved community as a business owner for over 35 years, trading as Mitchell's Automotive and Enon Chevron, now River's Bend Auto Care, developing life-long friendships with many of those he served. He treasured those relationships and his community. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, physical fitness, the outdoors, helping others and relaxing at his river house. In addition to his parents; Mr. Mitchell is preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn "Kaki" Vint; and a son, David L. Bausell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Thelma S. Mitchell; son, Bruce O. Mitchell (Sarah); daughters, Deborah B. Mabe (Dave), Sylvia Crosby and Tracy M. Watts (Daryl); a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Daffron; grandchildren, Kristen Henry (Davy), Eric Mabe (Cindy), Kelsey Short (Nick), Cody Watts and Sam Mitchell; and many loving great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Friends and loved ones may pay condolences on Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S Crater Road, Petersburg, VA.
