Oliver Jacob â??Jerryâ? Miles, Jr., 62, of Dinwiddie passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2010 following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Oliver Jacob Miles, Sr., and his son, Oliver Jeremy Miles. Jerry served his country in the U.S. Army from August 1966 to August 1968, which included a tour in Vietnam from February 1967 to February 1968. He worked for C&P Telephone Company and later retired from Lucent Technologies. He also worked part-time for AVAYA Communications. He was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers of America and the Dinwiddie Moose Lodge. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Woodlands Hunt Club in Chesterfield. Jerry was very active in the Boy Scouts, where he was a certified Boy Scout Leader, a Chapter Advisor with the Order of the Arrow from May 1998 to September 2002, and a volunteer with the fire department at the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Jerry was a firefighter, certified EMT, and known to many as â??OJâ?, who served in many positions such as the Assistant Chief with Colonial Heights Fire Department, Assistant Chief with Namozine Fire Department, where he was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Gale Hatton Miles; mother, Hazel Beasley Miles; daughters, Melissa Miles Anderson and husband, Robin and Terri Miles Moody and husband Scott and grandchildren, Mallory Moody, Chandler Anderson, Evan Moody, and Brooks Anderson; and his faithful and devoted daschund, Max. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the funeral home.
