After graduating from Scottsburg High School, Ms. Newman received her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Madison College, now James Madison University, and a master's degree in mathematics from the University of South Carolina. She did additional graduate work at the College of William and Mary, Virginia State University, and both Richmond Professional Institute, and Virginia Commonwealth University. A definite highlight of her continuing education was studying math one summer at Oxford University in England. Having taught mathematics from grades five through twelve in both private and public schools from Fairfax County to Petersburg to Prince George, she retired after thirty-six years teaching mathematics at Richard Bland College. Among other duties at the College, she was the Chairman of the Mathematics Department, and served as advisor to the Honor Court. She also enjoyed being the sponsor and only female member of Alpha Phi Omega, an all-male fraternity. A highlight of her Richard Bland years was mentoring students, especially those without a voice. In addition, she helped establish an International Travel Committee and academic credit for traveling students abroad. Her leadership of such trips for current and former students, as well as, members of the community brought great satisfaction. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Food Bank in Prince George and contributing to various charities.
