Paul Swanson Newman

SFC Paul Swanson Newman (RET), 83, of Chester, VA passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Born in Hillsville, VA he was the son of the late Claude and Laura Burnett Newman; and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Carico and Vera McGrady; and two brothers, Olen and Donald Newman. Paul was retired from the United States Army having served in the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts after 20 years of service. After retiring from the Army, he worked and retired from Millwright Local 1402. He was a member of DuPont Lodge No. 289 A.F. & A.M., Dinwiddie Lodge No. 136 A.F. & A.M. and was a member of the Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter No. 7. Mr. Newman was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing golf. He worked for several years with the youth football program in Chesterfield County. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Erma Lou Newman; a son, Larry Dean Newman and wife, Lisa; three sisters, Alma Marshall, Mary Ann Combs and Debbie McCraw and husband, Robbie; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with Masonic Rites beginning at 6:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, 1035 North Main St., Hillsville, VA 24343. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with interment to follow in Skyview Cemetery.
