Philip L. Carter, age 68, of Chester, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2009. He was born in Cabell County, West Virginia, son of the late Gaston Cline and Lula Sybil Carter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Earl, Keith, Jerry and Daniel Carter, and sisters, Helen Erwin, Naomi Clark and Loretta Carter. Mr. Carter resided in Virginia since 1962 and retired from American Tobacco in 1996 after 30 years of service. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1963. Mr. Carter is survived by his loving wife of almost 49 years, Mellessia Carter; daughter, Kim Wyatt and husband, Mike; son, Timothy Carter and wife, Beth; grandson, Alan Michael and wife, Kayla; granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Wyatt; siblings, Mike, Rodney and Lloyd Carter, Sharon Nance, Deloris Bias and Judy Ross; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Friday, June 12, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 10 a.m. in the chapel.
