Phillip Clayton Yerby III, MD (P.C.), of Hopewell, Virginia, passed away on January 8, 2022 at 93 years old. He was born in Richmond, VA to Phillip C. Yerby, Jr. and Nan Pettit Yerby.
Dr. Yerby attended the University of Richmond as well as the Medical College of Virginia (MCV-VCU). He completed his Residency at Norfolk General Hospital and spent his career in Family Medicine in Hopewell. He served as Chief of Staff at John Randolph Hospital and Director of their Nursing Home. After retiring from private practice, Dr. Yerby served Medical Supervisor of Med-Care in Chester, Va.
P.C. was an avid reader from a young age with a thirst for knowledge, reading 3 newspapers daily and a medical magazine in his back pocket if ever there was a free moment. He was always eager to try out new techniques and technologies. His ironic sense of humor served him well, especially Dad-jokes. His other hobbies included fishing, astronomy, chess and bridge. He enjoyed family vacations, watching NFL Football (he had 2 TV's, one for the Redskins and one for your favorite team), boxing matches and dining out except when Aunt Betty was visiting. He never passed up one of her delicious meals. He loved cats, from a young boy growing up at 204 Roanoke Street to Walnut Street.
P.C. will be remembered as a gentle, kind man who listened purposefully to his patients, friends, and family. He was a loving husband, dad, uncle, and granddad. He is preceded in death by his brother, John Pratt Yerby, Sr. (Kathleen (Peggy)). He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol Manieri Yerby; sons, Phillip C. Yerby IV (Deborah) and Wayne A. Yerby (Mary); and his "favorite" daughter, Mary Yerby Mismas (Jim); grandchildren, Bradley James Mismas, Amanda Elizabeth Yerby and Phillip C. Yerby V (Miranda), Logan Garrett Yerby; and great-grandchildren, Caden Michael and Kinsley Ann Yerby; and niece, Kathleen Yerby Gregory (Steve); and nephew, John Pratt Yerby, Jr. (Jennifer).
