It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful transition of Purnie Fleetwood Jordan on January 12, 2021, at his home at the age of 82.
Purnie was the second child born to Clarence and Lucille Jordan in Boykins, VA. His family relocated to Hertford County, NC, where Purnie graduated in 1955 from Calvin S. Brown High School, one of the first high schools established for people of color in North Carolina. He went on to enlist in the military immediately following graduation from high school and was assigned to the US Army Quartermaster Corps in Fort Lee, VA.
While stationed at Fort Lee, VA, Purnie met and married Patricia Ann Neal in Petersburg, VA, and had three children; Dianna, Wayne, and Ronald. He held various leadership positions in the Army to include Squadron Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Section Chief. He also completed courses at Austin Peay State and the University of Maryland while enlisted in the Army. Purnie served his country with distinction and honor until 1964 when he was honorably discharged. He received numerous awards and recognition to include the Good Conduct Medal, unit citations, and specialty badges and patches. He joined Standard Furniture Company in Richmond, VA, in 1964 as a salesman and account representative and began taking courses in 1974 at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College in preparation for a career change. In 1975, he joined Prudential Insurance Company as a District Agent and Staff Manager. It was here that Purnie found his niche and launched his own insurance company in 1979, P. Fleetwood Jordan & Associates, Inc. as well as a training academy in 1995, P. Fleetwood Jordan School of Insurance.
Purnie was a Mason (Masonic Lodge #263), motivational speaker for the Private Industry Council Job Program, Cluster Member of Virginia Union University, and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed boating, reading, sports, and live performances at casinos while occasionally pressing his luck on slot machines.
Purnie was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Patricia Ann Jordan, and his parents Clarence and Lucille Jordan.
