Ralph Edward Lamp, 89, departed this life on January 17, 2013. Born in Clearbrook, Virginia, he was a graduate of Stephen’s City High School, after which he served with pride as a rifleman with the 457th Combat Engineers during the invasion and subsequent liberation of Western Europe in World War II. After the war, he returned to Winchester, Virginia, married Patricia C. Adams, and then worked for 28 years for the United States Post Office, in which capacity he was known as “the Smiling Mailman”. He was an avid gardener and golfer, and enjoyed dinner theater in Manassas, Virginia, and dancing as a member of the Continental Club of Winchester. In 1991, he and his wife of 64 years relocated to Chesterfield County in order to be close to their daughter, Carol Lamp Kendall, and their three grandchildren, Bridget Kendall Neace, Emily Christine Kendall, and Justin Ryan Kendall; and their great grandson, Nicholas Conner Neace, all of whom survive him. Mr. Lamp was a lifelong Lutheran, first at Grace Lutheran in Winchester, and then at Grace Lutheran of Chester.
