Raymond Ashby Tarkington, Jr., 61, of Chester, VA was born on August 13, 1942 in Washington, NC, grew up in Edenton, NC and died on Sunday, June 13, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Ashby Tarkington, Sr. and Anita Harris Tarkington of Edenton, NC. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rebecca Mullen Tarkington and their children: Laurie Anne Tarkington of Arlington, VA; Susan Tarkington Price and husband, Jason Price, of Salem, VA; and Raymond Ashby Tarkington III of Chester, VA; one sister, Ellene Tarkington Wallin of Tucson, AZ. He graduated from John A. Holmes High School in Edenton, NC (1960) and went on to earn a B. S. Degree from Campbell College (1964), Masters Degree in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Doctorate of Education from Nova University. Dr. Tarkington served as principal of schools in Hopewell, VA and Richmond, VA. He also served in General Administration in the Richmond City Schools and was Superintendent of Schools in Gates County, NC. He was an active member of Chester Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at Chester Baptist Church on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Chester Baptist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
