Richard H. Avery, Sr. of McKenney, VA, passed away on January 28, 2017 at MCV Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was the founder of the Richard H. Avery Insurance Agency in Dinwiddie, VA in 1969 as well as a lifelong farmer in McKenney, VA. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Tharrington Avery; son, Richard H. Avery, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Lou Ann Godwin Avery; grandchildren, Abigail, Andrew and Alexandra Avery. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Leo Avery; parents, Charles Young and Lucy Havens Avery; sisters, Lucille Isbell, Sara V. Avery, and Joan L Farfan; brothers, Charles Y. Avery Jr. and John W. Avery. He was a longtime member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, McKenney, VA, and served as Chairman of the Administrative Council, Lay Leader, Sunday school teacher and sang in the church choir. In 2009 he was named Outstanding Senior Citizen by the Ruritan Clubs of Dinwiddie County, having been a member of the McKenney Ruritan Club since 1959, and was a founding member of the Darvills Ruritan Club. He served as President of both clubs over the years. He was also a charter member and Past President of the McKenney Hunt Club. He served on the Dinwiddie Social Services Board, former little league baseball coach and Commissioner of the McKenney Area Softball Association. The family will receive friends on Wednesday February 1st from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 6616 Boydton Plank Road, North Dinwiddie, VA. The funeral service will be held on Thursday February 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church, McKenney VA followed by the interment at the Asbury Cemetery.
