Richard "Huck" Slade

Richard Thomas ?Huck? Slade, 71, passed away Tuesday March 7, 2006 at his home in Wakefield, VA. Born September 19, 1934 in Sussex County he was the son of the late Robert Thomas Slade and Marjorie Noon Slade. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps. Huck was a well known and beloved member of the Wakefield community; an avid gardener, outdoorsman, fisherman, and loved dancing. He was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church; Wakefield, Veterans Club; was named Ruritan of the Year in 1999 as a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club; and was a member of Wakefield Sportsman?s Club where he served as custodian for over 20 years. Huck was a very hard worker and loved his work. He was a ?Jack of All Trades? and a master carpenter. He had his own remodeling and repair business and retired as head of the maintenance department at the Virginia Diner after 20 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathryn B. Slade. He is survived by their son, Thomas Wayne Slade of Wakefield; two stepsons, Charles Lawrence ?Jimmy? Baldwin and wife, Mary Ann, of Kitty Hawk, NC, and William Lee ?Billy? Baldwin of Wakefield; one stepdaughter, Erma Sue Williams and husband, Tommy, of Chesterfield, VA; very special friend and caretaker, Elizabeth ?Lisa? O?Connor and her two sons; two sisters, Almeda Lanier and husband, David, of Wakefield and Margarette Harris of Petersburg; nine grandchildren, April Baldwin, Buffy Sacre, Kathy Dondanville, Christopher Derek Tompkins, Beth Anne Buckwalter, Bryan Edward Shelton, Sarah Kathryn Baldwin, John Bradford Baldwin, and Adam Brock Baldwin; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Friday, March 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Kerr officiating. Interment will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence of David and Almeda Lanier, Wakefield.
