Richard G. “Jack” Laine, Jr., born June 12, 1921 in Sussex County, Virginia died Sunday, June 6. Preceded in death by his mother, Virgie Mary Laine; father, Richard G. Laine Sr; sisters, Annie M. Richardson, Pearl S. Cheeley, Elsie L. Greeson and Maggie L. Rott.

Survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Stewart Laine, son, Richard G. “Rick” Laine, III of Richmond, daughters Jackie Laine Diaz of Dinwiddie and Suzanna F. Riddle of Colonial Heights. Three granddaughters; Kayla L. Diaz, Heather M. Diaz and Alicia R. Lingenfelt and one great grandson, Austin Lingenfelt, one niece, Phyllis Cheeley and a loving caregiver Dawn M. Magda who became like another daughter to him.

He lived in Petersburg from the age of 5 and worked at Brown and Williamson for several years. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served in the Caribbean after World War II began. On the night of June 5, 1944 the LST-75 he was assigned to headed to Normandy, at daybreak on June 6, 1944 he went onshore at Omaha Beach. He was a very proud D-Day survivor.

He went to work for VEPCO after returning from the war, working for them for 38 years. He has lived in Dinwiddie County for over 40 years. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He loved sports and played softball and baseball in the Tri-Cities for many years, he was also an avid golfer.

He started studying the Bible over 30 years ago, just taking down notes. Last fall he published a book called “The Kingdom of God”, which was a labor of love for him. He was extremely proud of this accomplishment, as was his family and friends. He was a former member of Monumental Baptist Church in Petersburg for 30 years and has been a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Dinwiddie for 30 years.


A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary S. White, pastor of Lebanon United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
