Richard Joseph Magg

May 4, 1937 — August 25, 2022

Heaven has gained a precious soul, Richard Joseph Magg, Sr. has stepped over to Heaven on August 25, 2022. What a rich and full life he lived! He was born in Queens, New York on May 4, 1937 to a lovely immigrant couple, who gladly welcomed him as the second son. The house was not full until the third brother came along. Oh, what adventures these three brothers had! He often told of how on an icy and chilled morning, the brothers would race down the staircase to be first to get to the frozen cream on top of the milk that was delivered to the porch. Richard recalled the time that he had gathered baby frogs and stuffed them into his pockets. When he got home, he knew he couldn't take them into the house, so where did he put them? He decided that Mother's garden would be a good place for them. The next day when Mother was working in the garden, he heard her screaming! When he came outside, she is shooing away all the little frogs. He got in trouble for that too. Richard loved to be outdoors and enjoyed animals. One of his first pets was "Whitey," a white pigeon that had been injured and he nursed back to health. As he walked to school, Whitey would follow him along, flying from telephone pole to telephone pole. When he got out of school, there was Whitey waiting for him. One of Richard's first jobs was to help his friend Ed Fegus with the newspaper route. Although, Eddie gave him the tough part of the route, down a long hill and back again. Richard didn't complain because when he got to the bottom of the hill, there was a bakery where fresh rolls were for sale, then half way up was a malt shop (vanilla malt shake), then at the top of the hill was a pastry shop, where he bought his cannoli's. He said he didn't make much money, but it was worth it!

This wonderful man met the love of his life, Jane, when he was only nine years old. They were best friends and got married when he was 23 years old. Jane and Richard had a wonderful life for many years. God blessed them with three beautiful children. He was college educated, served in the Navy, and worked with his father-in-law to build a business that is still in the family today. As in everyone's life - it changes. The Lord decided to take Jane a little bit early, and Richard was a widower for a period of time. But life for him was not over.

The Lord put another woman in his life, and they were given two more Magg children. His heart was so full of love that he adopted two of her children from an earlier relationship. He was a father to them from childhood to adulthood.

Again, life changes, and he found a woman who needed to be rescued. So, he came in his "horse-powered" white stallion Ford and scooped her up and took her to his castle. He planned their fairytale wedding, complete with costume of him as a frog prince and her as a princess dressed in an ice pink ball gown. Yes, we lived happily ever after for the years the Lord allowed.

Richard accepted Jesus as his Savior on April 3, 1950. His actions and deeds show the Love of Christ to all who met him. Many family members, grandchildren, and church family would like to invite you to celebrate his life at J.T. Morriss & Son - Hopewell Chapel on September 7, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. A reception will follow at his church, Joy Fellowship Worship Center, 1001 Perrymont Rd, Hopewell, VA 23860. In lieu of flowers, he would have asked for you to give a love offering for the new gym we are building to meet the needs of community. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
