Richard Kenneth Nowell, 73, of Chester, Virginia passed away peacefully on November 19, 2017 after a brief but intense illness. Born June 17, 1944, Ken was preceded in death by his parents Norman and Addie Nowell. He is survived by his sister, Gayle Vergara, and her husband James Vergara, Jr. as well as several cousins and many friends and acquaintances. Growing up in Chester, Ken was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Thomas Dale High School where he played basketball for the Knights. After working for a few years he entered the Air Force, serving from 1965-1968 during the Vietnam War era. After proudly serving in the military, Ken returned to Chester to participate in his loves-the fire department and bowling. You could always find him one place or the other. He loved the fire department and started as a volunteer and then went professional. His last assignment with the county was as a machinist with the maintenance department. Ken, affectionately known as “Moose” to many, had a variety of interests. Bowling was dear to his heart and he spent many evenings with team, “The No Split Zone”, as well as other bowling activities. During his career he bowled four “300” or perfect games. Other activities included an avid participation in the Oldies But Goodies Car Club and working at the Tractor Museum in Colonial Heights. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. The family will receive friends, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home of Chester, where a service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be registered at
