Richard Louis Phelps, Sr., 77 of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, October 28, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Samuel & Catherine Staley Phelps. He was a past member of Immanuel Baptist Church, loved woodworking, especially making toys for his grandchildren, all types of fishing, especially salt water fishing, was a member of Hopewell Moose Lodge # 1472 and was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Phelps is survived by his sons, Richard L. Phelps, Jr. & wife Malinda, James B. Phelps, Steve A. Bleistein & wife Sherry, Michael W. Bleistein & wife Mary Ann, grandchildren, Emily Phelps, Melissa Bolton & husband Ian, Stephanie Kenney & husband Criss, Corey, Cole and Michaela Bleistein, great grandchildren, Parker and Alyssa Bolton, Ian Bolton, Jr., Catie Marston-Kenney, and special caregiver and mother of his sons, Mildred Irby. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 31 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, funeral service will be held on Monday, November 1 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joseph Elmore officiating. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park.
