Dr. Richard Schwartz

Dr. Richard Schwartz, 73, of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away on January 11, 2025. Dr. Schwartz is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Iris. Dr. Schwartz was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. He was the son of Bernard and Lillian Schwartz. Dr. Schwartz obtained a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Michigan, a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from Washington University in St. Louis, and a PhD in Music Theory from Washington University. Dr. Schwartz spent his entire teaching career in the Music Department at Virginia State University from 1976 until his retirement in 2016. Upon his retirement, he received the honor of Professor Emeritus. He was a prolific composer, an accomplished musician, and a dedicated teacher. This kind, compassionate man will be missed by his numerous students, friends, and family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
