Richard A. Whiting, 100, of Colonial Heights passed away on January 11, 2011. He was a native of Oradell, New Jersey, and the son of the late Richard A. and Mabel Brown Whiting. While spending the summer of 1933 with cousins in New Brunswick, Canada, he met his future wife, Doris McLaughlin. They married in 1935 and lived briefly in Oradell, New Jersey and New Brunswick, Canada before moving to Petersburg in 1950. After he retired from Allied Chemical (Honeywell), he was a toll attendant on the Richmond â?? Petersburg Turnpike and later worked at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home until he reached the age of 80. He also gave driving lessons to many in the Tri-Cities area during the 1950â??s and 1960â??s. He was preceded in death by a grandson, David Todd Whiting. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Doris Whiting of Colonial Heights; sons, Robert Whiting (Anita) of Sutherland, David Whiting (JoAnne) of Colonial Heights; daughter, Nancy Crawford (Robert) of Stafford; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, special cousins in Canada, Bernice Brown, Mary Everett, and Velma Murch and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Ettrick United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for 40 years. He loved trains and was a member of the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society for over 50 years. He and Doris spent many summers in New Brunswick, Canada staying in the log cabin that he built in 1933 as a vacation home for his mother. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service where a memorial service will be held at 4:00pm.
