Robert Chalmers Angevine

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Robert Chalmers Angevine passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2013 after a short illness. Bob was born on August 25, 1925 in Pataskala, Ohio to Leon Angevine and Bernice (Green) Angevine. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Elizabeth (Dickson) Angevine. Bob is survived by their children, Margo Elizabeth Angevine of Titusville, NJ and her husband Miles Ritter, Charles Leon Angevine of Laramie, WY and his wife Judi Diamond, John Robert Angevine of Chester, VA; granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Angevine of Alexandria, VA and her husband Keith Shovlin, and great-granddaughter, Michelle Ellen Angevine. He was predeceased by his daughter in-law, Dawn Michelle Angevine. Bob was the youngest and only surviving son of Leon and Bernice; born and raised on the family dairy farm in Pataskala, OH. His brothers, Thomas, Howard, and Wendell predeceased him.

Bob and Betty met en route to Germany in 1953 while travelling on the USNS Henry Gibbins. Bob was assigned as a Second Lieutenant in Mannheim; and they married July 24, 1954 in Heidelberg, Germany where Betty worked as a secretary for the U.S. Army. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel following 22 years of active service in the U.S. Army from 1945 through 1969. He was inducted as a Private for training in Infantry in April 1945, and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1946 while serving in Okinawa. He attended OCS at Ft Monmouth, NJ in 1952, and was later stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA where he learned to fly and summited Mt Rainier with the famed guide, Jim Whittaker. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Signal Corps after serving duty in New Mexico, Germany, Colorado, Korea, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Tehran, Vietnam (196th Light Infantry Brigade) and Virginia. The longest the family ever lived in one place was three years in Tehran, Iran. His awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Japan and Germany), Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 2 Loops, and 3 Overseas Bars.

The family moved to Falmouth, MA after his retirement and resided there until 1990. Bob worked as Administrative Director & Secretary/Treasurer of New Alchemy Institute, Inc., a non-profit, scientific and educational research center that did pioneering research in organic agriculture, aquaculture and bioshelter design powered by renewable resources. Bob operated the Falmouth Income Tax Service for many years and also worked with the Massachusetts Veterans Agency in Boston, MA. In 1990 they moved to Mathews County, VA where they lived on the North River and enjoyed sailing both the river and the Chesapeake Bay. In 2005, they moved to Fords Colony, Williamsburg, VA, and in 2011 they moved to Chester, Virginia to be near their son John and his family. He was an active member of the Military Officers Association of America and the USCG Auxiliary. He loved travel, adventure, sailing and his family.

A memorial service for family and friends will be conducted on February 13, 2013 at 2 PM at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with Military Honors at a later date. Condolences may be registered online at www.jtmorriss.com .
