Robert Lee Baxter, 87, of Petersburg passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021. Born July 31, 1933, he was the son of the late Herbert Alexander and Katie Slaughter Baxter, and was also preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Wells; brothers, John H. and Harvey Baxter; nephew, Larry Wells; and nieces, Lori Baxter and Suzanne Baxter. Robert, affectionately known as “Pickle”, graduated from Petersburg High School. After graduating, Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Pickle then went on to work as a supervisor for Petersburg Public Schools, and later became owner and operator of Baxter Janitorial Service. He was a member of the Petersburg Aerie #882 Eagles organization and the American Legion. Pickle enjoyed golfing, fishing, and woodworking. He was also a master horseshoe thrower, but was most well known for his reign as cornhole champion. To relax, he could be found watching General Hospital or spending time with his friends. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Sharon “Sherry” Baxter; daughters, Robin Baxter (Linda), Ginna Thomas, Angela Miller (Todd); grandchildren, Lauren Kendall, Justin Anderson (Caitlyn), Jeremy Anderson, Jordan Parker; great-grandchild, Tanner Anderson; special nephew and friend, Rudy Wells; nephews, Mike and John Wells, Mark Baxter; and other extended family members. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2021 in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Homes, 103 S. Adams Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23803. Private interment will take place in Southlawn Memorial Park at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
