Robert Alton Gardner, Jr.

August 8, 1948 — January 19, 2024

Robert "Bob" Alton Gardner Jr., 75, of Chester, VA died January 19, 2024. Bob was born and raised in Saratoga, NC and the eldest son of the late Robert Alton Gardner Sr. and LaVohn R. Lewis. Bob played baseball, basketball, and football in school and was the first freshman to letter in all three sports at his high school. He was also quite the dancer and appeared on a local TV program featuring kids from the area. He obtained certification to operate heavy equipment and spent a dedicated career of over 30 years in construction, operating all types of construction equipment in various types of projects before retirement. Bob loved his family dearly, never met a stranger, treated everyone he met like a friend, and jumped in without hesitation any time help was needed. Not one to sit still for long, Bob enjoyed gardening, lawn care, and home maintenance projects. Bob especially enjoyed family gatherings around good food and attending events in which his grandchildren participated.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother, James Gardner (Debbie) of Elm City, NC; and is survived by his beloved daughter, Kelly and son-in-law Dustin Carpenter of Chester, VA; grandchildren and the lights of his world, McKayla and Landon Carpenter; sister, Debbie Britt (Charles) of Rougemont, NC; many adored nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. The family will hold a private Celebration of Life at a later date. The family is being served by the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
