Robert Juer of Richmond, formerly of Petersburg, passed away October 10, 2006 at St Maryâ??s Hospital. He was born on April 6, 1915 in Sarvar, Hungary. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julie Wixel Juer and George Juer; his wives, Mary Boisseau Juer and Nancy Soyars Juer; his sister, Charlotte Juer Welch; and his brother, Frederick Juer. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Juer Barnwell (and husband, Richard); two grandsons, Richard Walker Barnwell, Jr. (and wife, Elizabeth), Robert Wixel Barnwell; and three great granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Virginia Gilliam Lewis; his nephews, William Evert Welch (and wife, Ann), Dr. Robert Craig Juer (and wife, Pam), Frederick George Juer, William Gilliam Lewis (and wife, Pam), David Hargrave Lewis (and wife, Cheryl); his niece, Julie Juer Isaacson (and husband, Mike); great nephews and great nieces of whom he was extremely proud. In addition, he is survived by two stepdaughters, Wilson Ross Trevvett (and husband, Warren), Nancy Ross Hugo (and husband, John), four step grandchildren and ten step-great grandchildren. He came to this country at age 5 and was raised in the City Point section of Hopewell, overlooking the James River. There he was active in St. Johns Episcopal Church and Boy Scout Troop 1. He attended preparatory school at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut, graduating in 1933. He graduated form Lehigh University in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He returned to Hopewell to work at Allied Chemical Corporation. He then re-established Boy Scout Troop 1 in Hopewell. He served in World War II in the Ordinance Department as a contracting officer and commanding officer of the Cactus Ordinance Works in Effire, Texas and was in charge of closing Pantex Ordinance Works in Amarillo, Texas. He returned to Allied Chemical Corporation in 1946. He was a Professional Engineer and active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and other professional organizations as well as the Country Club of Petersburg. He served on the vestry of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church in Petersburg, was Receiving Treasurer there for many years, and he and his wife, Mary, taught the Senior High School Sunday School Class. He had a Boy Scout Troop at that church, was active in the local scouting councils, participating in the start of several of them. He also started a Cub Scout pack at the church. While at Allied Chemical Corporation, he was responsible for the engineering, design and construction of many chemical plants, both in this country and abroad. Some of these included plants in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, South Point, Ohio, Paris, Taiwan, and Iran. He retired from Allied Chemical Corporation as Senior Project Manager in 1980 with more than 43 years of service. Following retirement, he continued being actively involved in church work and volunteered with AARP, helping people prepare their income taxes. Wherever he was, Robert Juer always found a way to serve. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury Richmond at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2006.
