Robert Herman Kies

Colonel Robert H. Kies, US Army, Ret, 97, of Naples, FL, died on December 7, 2023. A native of Ohio, he was the son of the late Herman P. and Matilda C. Kies; and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby B. Kies; second wife, Gloria Sweeney Kies; son, Michael; brothers, James and Richard; and sister, Kathryn.
He is survived by his sons, Robert H. Jr., of Warrenton, VA, and Kenneth J. (Kathy), McLean, VA; daughters, Kathleen J. Cote, Naples, FL, and Pamela B. Sherouse (Jack), Ocala, FL; sister, Eva Romick (Duane), Douglasville, GA; stepdaughter, Kathleen McDonald (Dan), Sunset, NC; stepson, COL (Ret) Patrick C. Sweeny (Grace), Charleston, SC; brother-in-law, Ken Cox (Rochelle), CA; sister-in-law, Dorthy Kies, Cuyahoga Falls, OH; sister-in-law, Shirley Kies, Lodi, OH; daughter-in-law, Kathy L. Kies, Hastings, MN; and a multitude of nephews and nieces. COL Kies was blessed with six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
COL Kies was a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, retiring in 1977 after over 32 years of active duty service. He subsequently retired from BDM Corp. in 1981. COL Kies was awarded The Combat Infantry Badge w/star, the Legion of Merit & 3 OLC, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart & OLC, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, and was twice decorated by the Republic of Vietnam for exceptionally meritorious service. COL Kies was a graduate of The University of Nebraska at Omaha. He was a lifetime member of MOAA, AUSA, DAV, KWVA, and the Knights of Columbus Appomattox Assembly and Father Jan Konicek Council 14511.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, lead by Father Joe Goldsmith, at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. A burial, with full military honors, will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Petersburg Chapel, on Monday, December 18, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Glenmary Home Missioners, P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, OH 45246-9988.
