Rodney Dean Dunworth, Sr.

December 3, 1944 — March 30, 2023

Sgt Major Rodney Dean Dunworth, Sr. (Retired US Army), 78, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Rod was born in Dubois, PA in 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Dunworth and Vera Kaufman-Grace, his wife Roberta, his brother Gary Dunworth, his son, Michael Dunworth, and his step-daughter, Glenda Dodson.

He is survived by his daughter, Tonya Lowder (Mike); son, Buddy Dunworth (Jacqui); daughter, Krystle Bryant (Wesley); grandchildren, Dylan Chandler, Race Lowder, Peyton Dunworth, Emma Dunworth, Jenson Murr, Scott Dodson, Kimberly Hamrick, Bill Dodson; great-grandchildren, Atlas Dunworth, Colin Dodson, Austin Dodson, Sebastian Hamrick; as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Rod proudly served in the US Army for 26 years (1962-1988). He continued to serve the US Army as a civil service employee for another 17 years. Rod was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, The American Legion Post (#284), The Veteran of Foreign War (637), Prince George (#115) A.F. & A.M.

Rod traveled the world for both for work and pleasure. He loved attending state fairs and eating at 'fancy' restaurants. Rod loved tinkering with cars and attending car shows. He was known to soundly beat an opponent or two on the racquetball court during his time. Rod was a social butterfly who never met a stranger. You would often find him at the bowling alley or playing bingo (for the love of the game and his social prowess). Rod loved his family and friends dearly.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at 5pm (viewing with a service to follow at 6pm) at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son, 820 W. Broadway Ave. Hopewell, VA 23860.

A military funeral with full honors will be held at his final resting place in Arlington's National Cemetery on a date to be determined later.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Rod to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Condolences may be registered online at www.jtmorriss.com .
