Marable, Rosalie Sutherland of Petersburg, VA, died June 20, 2016 at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, Virginia. She was born September 4, 1924 in Clintwood, VA. She was the daughter of the late George Cleveland Sutherland and Bertha McFall Sutherland. She attended Radford State Teachers College and graduated cum laude from the University of Tennessee. She also attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Rosalie was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority; Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity; and Kappa Omicron Nu, Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi Honors Fraternities. She was a member of Poplar Lawn Garden Club, Petersburg Garden Club, The Study Club and Christ & Grace Episcopal Church. She served on the Board of Directors of the Ladies Virginia State Golf Association, the Children’s Home Society of Virginia, and The Garden Club of Virginia. She was the Soprano Soloist at Washington Street Methodist Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for over twenty years. Rosalie loved the sense of integrity, honesty and competition in her favorite pastimes’ of golf, horticulture and bridge. She was preceded in death by her brothers Dr. George F. Sutherland and Edwin M. Sutherland, her two sisters Pauline S. Skeen and Billie S. Pobst, her daughter Lucinda W. Short, and her stepdaughter Martha M. Marable. She is survived by her husband of forty one years, Eugene Russell Marable; son Burton Prettyman Short III and his wife Jane Dasovich Short; stepson Benjamin Thomas Kinsey Marable; and four grandchildren Mary Katherine Short, Ellen Sutherland Short, Burton Prettyman Short IV, and George Prettyman Short.
