Ruth Leigh Hawkins Cowling, 83, passed away Monday, June 12, 2006 at River View on the Appomattox in Hopewell, VA. Born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Hawkins and Alice Riddle Hawkins. She resided in Waverly until retiring to Virginia Beach in the mid-1980's. Mrs. Cowling was predeceased by her husband, Chestley T. Cowling, Sr., after 65 years of marriage.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Cowling Albert and husband, Richard E. Albert, of Richmond; two sons, C. T. Cowling, Jr. and fiancé, S. Michelle Lauter, of Richmond, and William Lee Cowling and wife, Janet H. Cowling, of Zuni, VA; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Regan and Marc Cowling; two brothers, Rev. William E. Hawkins of Suffolk, VA, and Dr. Robert T. Hawkins of Costa Mesa, CA; and one sister, Alice "Bootsie" Hawkins Clarke of Waverly, VA.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 13, 2006, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, Virginia. Funeral services and interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, VA 23890; or to a charity of choice. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, assisted the family with arrangements.
