Sadie Lane Payne

Sadie L. Payne, formerly of Petersburg, VA, died of natural causes on June 8, 2021, at her current residence in Lakewood Retirement Community, Henrico, VA. She was 98 years old.
Sadie is survived by her daughter, Vickie P. Ritter, son Thomas W. Payne, Jr (wife Susan) and grandchildren Wil Payne, Samantha White (husband Kyle) and Meaghan Payne. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Maxine Lane and Mary P. Creed (husband Bill), many nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews and her many friends.
Sadie was predeceased in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Thomas W. Payne, Sr. (April 28, 2018), her parents Mr. & Mrs. J. D. Lane, her brothers Roy and Cecil Lane and her sister Edna Morton.
Sadie was born on September 19, 1922, in Caswell County, NC, and spent her first 20 years living in the Henderson, NC area. In 1943, she moved to Washington, DC, and remained there for eight years, where she worked for the War Production Board and then the State Department. Sadie was regularly active at The First Baptist Church on 16th street in DC. She loved baseball and attended many Washington Senators baseball games. She got to see Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio play. While living in DC, she took a cruise to Cuba with her friend Virginia Park. In early 1951, she moved back to North Carolina. On April 14, 1951, in Raleigh, NC, she married Thomas W Payne, Sr. They began their life together in Great Bridge, VA, and in 1955, they moved to Petersburg, VA, where they lived for 44 years raising two children, Vickie and Tom, Jr and made countless memories together.
While in Petersburg, Sadie was active in the Federated Women’s Club of Petersburg, served as a Twig for the old Petersburg General Hospital, and was a Gideon Auxiliary member for 53 years. She was a member of West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, VA, for over 50 years, where she was active as a Sunday School Teacher, Flower Committee Chairperson and Women’s Circle member. She was highly creative and an expert with her sewing machine. Her favorite thing was to make things for family and friends at Christmas time. Doing for others gave her the greatest joy. Sadie loved to travel. While living in Petersburg, she went with her family out west, with the highlight being the family visit to Yellowstone National Park. She traveled to Europe with friends, and she traveled to Alaska and Canada with her husband Tom. In the early 1980’s, Sadie and Tom purchased a second home known as “Pamview” on the Pamlico River in North Carolina. Spending time with family and friends at “Pamview” was part of Sadie’s most cherished memories.
In 1999, Sadie and Tom moved to Lakewood Retirement Community. Sadie made new friends. She enjoyed being part of the sewing group at Lakewood. She was involved with a group that made tooth fairy bags for school children in Richmond. Sadie loved baking goodies and delivering them to residents in health care. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. She loved to send out Christmas cards and enjoyed making Christmas tree ornaments for the tree at the Sims Center in Lakewood. One of her highlights, during this period of her life was celebrating her 50th Wedding anniversary at Derbyshire Baptist Church, with her husband Tom. In her later years she has enjoyed sending out birthday cards and putting together puzzles, preserving them, and giving them as gifts to her family and friends. Sadie was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and knew she would be with her Savior in eternal life.
Visitation and the Funeral Service for Sadie Payne will be held at J T Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Chester, VA, on Saturday, June 12,2021. Family will receive friends for visitation from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and the funeral service will be at 3:00 PM. Interment will be private.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff at Lakewood and individuals from Medi Home Hospice- Richmond for the care and support they provided.
