Sallie Van Dyck Wood died peacefully November 19, 2016 at her apartment in Rosewood Village in Charlottesville, Virginia of natural causes. Born in New York City December 18, 1927 she attended Friends School, Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. After her father’s death the family moved to Petersburg, VA and she attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, graduating in 1949. Mrs. Wood taught at Colonial Heights School until her marriage in 1951 to James Arthur Wood, Jr. of Chevy Chase, MD. They lived in Richmond, VA and Pittsburgh, PA before moving back to the Washington DC area in 1965, and then to Charlottesville, VA in 2001. Mrs. Wood was active for many years in The Fourth Presbyterian Church of Bethesda, MD. She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend, as well as a great example of a life well lived. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, James Arthur Wood, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA. She leaves behind three children, Elizabeth Wood Blakely of Irvine, CA, James Arthur Wood III of Richmond, VA and Baldwin Jennings Wood of Charlottesville, VA along with seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Robert Van Dyck of Fort Lee, NJ and two nephews. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA.
