Paul Freeman Micou, Sr., 90, of Chester died March 8, 2005 at MCV Hospital. An active member of the Chester community for over 60 years, he was born in Rutherfordton, NC, the son of the late Ernest Lee and Mary Katherine Freeman Micou. Mr. Micou grew up in Cumberland County, attended Hampden-Sydney College, and married Rosa William McLaurine in 1939. The couple moved to Chester in 1940. Upon his retirement as supervisor from the DuPont Company in Richmond, he and his wife managed the activities of the Farmers? Mutual Insurance Company, overseeing its merger with Northern Neck Insurance. Mr. Micou was an elder emeritus of Chester Presbyterian Church where he also served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, member of the Men of the Church, and chair and member of numerous committees directing the growth of the church and building progress since the 1940?s. A past Worshipful Master of Chester Masonic Lodge 94 AF & AM, Mr. Micou served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 16th Masonic District, secretary of the Chester Lodge, and as a lodge instructor for 25 years, teaching catechism to 50 to 75 Masons during that time. He was a member of Manchester #48 Royal Arch Masons, ACCA Temple Shrine, and Chester Chapter #121, Order of the Eastern Star. A charter member of the Chester Civitans, he served as the organization?s third president and was a member and chair of many committees. He was the second member of the group to receive the Civitans? prestigious Honor Key Award. In 1990, he was nominated to the Chesterfield County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for outstanding service to the community. Throughout his life, Mr. Micou was an avid outdoorsman, a bird hunter and fisherman and a renowned gardener in the village of Chester. Well-known for his skills as a cook, in his later years he was responsible for the planning and serving of hundreds of meals for community organizations. Mr. Micou was preceded in death by daughter Anne McLaurine Micou Delhagen. Survivors are his wife Rosa McLaurine Micou; son Paul Freeman Micou, Jr. and wife Barbara of Chester, daughter Mary Byrd Micou Martin of Morattico, son-in-law Kenneth F. Delhagen of Richmond; and five grandsons; Joseph Wesley Martin, Jr., wife Jeri and their children Wesley and Mary Evelyn; Ernest Freeman Martin; Matthew Freeman Micou and wife Lisa; Paul Burton Micou; and Russell Frayser Micou. Also surviving are Kenneth F. Delhagen, Jr.; Lisa Delhagen Vaile, husband Brian and their daughter Victoria Anne; and Circe Beadle, husband Jeffrey and daughters Corinne Anne and Sydney. The family will receive friends Friday, March 11th at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service from 7 to 8:30 PM. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12th at 2 PM at the funeral home with Dr. David Horne officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
