Robert Newton Parker, Sr., 90, of Waverly, passed away on July 16, 2008 at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital, Richmond. Son of the late William T. Parker, Sr. and Cora Brooking Parker, he was born on January 16, 1918 in Sussex County.
He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. After working as an electrician briefly, he joined the US Navy in July of 1941 and served in WWII as an electrcianâ??s mate first class on a mine sweeper off the coast of Africa. Upon returning in 1946, he farmed Cool Spring Farm near Homeville and also operated R.N. Parker Logging Company for many years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, contract bridge player and sports enthusiast with a special love for baseball. He assisted in the start of the basketball and baseball programs at Waverly High School. He was a founding member of both the Waverly Ruritan Club and Littleton Hunt Club. He was a lifelong member of the Southern Baptist Convention, first at Elam Baptist Church and then a dedicated and devoted deacon of the Newville Baptist Church. He was also a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans, Petersburg Branch.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Anderson Parker; a son, James Anderson Parker of Waverly; a daughter, Sue P. Kamenar and husband, Paul of Chevy Chase, MD; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Parker; four grandchildren, Sherry L. Campisano, Roberta D. Pyne, Susan M. Kamenar, and Alice M. Kamenar; three great grandchildren, Renay, Raymond and Anthony; a step granddaughter, Jody Wright; two step great grandchildren, Joseph and Haleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert N. Parker, Jr; three brothers, William T. Parker, Jr., Grover B. Parker, Joseph B. Parker, and a sister, Mary Virginia Vogel.
A church service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Newville Baptist Church, 7710 Beefsteak Rd.,Waverly, VA 23890. Burial will follow at Newville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Hawkins officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence on Friday, July 18, 2008 from 4:00-8:00 PM and after the service on Saturday in the fellowship hall at the church.
