Stanley Arthur Mach, 81, of Sutherland, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at Southside Regional Medical Center. Son of the late Elizabeth Vonasek and Vaclav Mach, he was a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County having spent his early years in the Greenwood Farms area off Old Cox Road. He attended St. Joseph school and Midway High School.
Mr. Mach began his career with E.E. Titus Foundry and Machine Shop before joining the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed at the San Diego Naval Base, served on Okinawa, and completed his service at the Norfolk Naval Station. Mr. Mach’s naval uniform is now on display along with his picture at the U.S. Navy Museum in Portsmouth, VA.
He returned to Titus Foundry and Machine for more than 20 years where he earned Journeyman Machinist certification. In this capacity, for many years he worked on the printing press of The Progress Index in order to keep the papers running. He took his expertise to Brenco, Inc. becoming supervisor of a roller-bearing production phase. After ten years, Mr. Mach joined Brown and Williamson before retiring in 1984.
Mr. Mach was a member of the Virginia Civil Defense during the late 50’s and early 60’s. He was renowned throughout the area for his winemaking, well as being the Dance Caller for years at the old Peanut Hall. In later years, he helped many any type of machine or heirloom clock needing repair. He enjoyed working in his garden and was always doing something at his church.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years the former Catherine Piecek, daughters: Bernadette (Thomas) Rouse of Alpharetta, GA, Andrea (David) Slatinsky of Eads, TN, Angela (Thomas, deceased) Connelly of Sutherland, son Stanley (Susan) of Concord, NC, sister Elizabeth M. Vesely of Petersburg, and a sister-in-law Elizabeth R. Piecek of Sutherland. Beloved by seven grandchildren: Rene’ Christine R. Kummer, Anthony B. Rouse, Amy S. Norsworthy, Timothy B. Mach, David M. Slatinsky, Jennifer M. Lazarus, Alison C. Mach, and four great-grandchildren, in addition to a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Mach was pre-deceased by a son, Brian Thomas Mach, and a brother Joseph V. Mach.
A Christian Wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2004, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss and sons followed by a visitation until 9:00 p.m.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2004, at St. John Catholic Church, Squirrel Level Road in Dinwiddie, where Mr. Mach was the oldest continuous parishioner. Concelebrants will be Rev. John J. Martinez and Rev. Robert M. Spencer. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
