Stanley Yeskolske

d. July 1, 2007

Surry VA

Stanley Yeskolske (i), age 90, died Friday June 29, 2007 at his residence at Swanns Point Farm in Surry County. Of Polish descent, he was born on Dec. 28, 1916 in Perth Amboy NJ, son of the late Alexander & Elizabeth Basczewska Yeskolski. He was the widower of his wife of 60 years, Cecelia Alice â??Irishâ? Yeskolski who died Dec. 27, 2001.

He leaves behind his loving sisters Maria Dever of FL, Madelyn Rakov of GA, a daughter, Cecelia Alice Yeskolski of WVA and a son and his wife, Stanley Yeskolski JR and Francheska and a grandson Stanley Alexander all of Virginia Beach, and several cousins, nieces and nephews including a beloved cousin Dorothy Jaskolski and her daughter Janet Mangano both of New Jersey.

A successful businessman from an early age, as a young man Stanley owned and operated a thriving grocery store and apartment building business in Perth Amboy NJ. At the start of World War II, he sold his businesses and joined the U. S. Navy, serving in the Atlantic Theater. His ship, the LST 176, participated in the Normandy â??D-Dayâ? landings.

Following the war, he and his beloved â??Irishâ?? moved to Norfolk VA where he began work as a meat cutter in the Deli Department of Colonial Stores, Inc. He purchased a 24-hour diner that he named â??Stanleyâ??s Diner â??at Wards Corner in Norfolk. He eventually expanded this to include The Tally Ho Tavern next door. During this time he also owned and operated a dairy farm in the Kempsville section of Virginia Beach, started a neighborhood tavern in Portsmouth, and then remodeled Stanleyâ??s Diner and Tally Ho Tavern into The Town House Inn at Wards Corner.

In 1972, he purchased the 1850-acre Swanns Point Plantation on the James River in Surry County and the couple moved permanently to the farm in 1974. At Swanns Point, Stanley raised horses, Black Angus cattle and expanded and modernized the farming operation.

Stanley was a tireless and successful farmer, restaurant and business entrepreneur throughout his life. He was proud of the fact that he was an expert meat cutter, a trade he learned from his father. He loved the grocery store business and farming and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loved the Swanns Point beach on the James River where he spent countless hours. The James River, he said, reminded him of his childhood playing on a small river that ran through Perth Amboy NJ. He had a soft spot for animals of all kinds and he was natural at horse training and as a cattleman. He also loved to cook and he enjoyed sharing this talent with his wife, his son and daughter and daughter-in-law.

A celebration and remembrance of Stanleyâ??s life will be held on Saturday July 7, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Purviance Funeral Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son in Wakefield. Immediately following the service on Saturday, friends and family are invited to a time of visitation and refreshments at the funeral home. At the conclusion of the reception, those who wish may go in procession with the family to Swanns Point Farm Cemetery for the interment. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Crater Community Hospice, 840 W. Roslyn Rd., Suite E, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Condolences may be posted on line at www.jtmorriss.com .
