Susan Vaughan Henry

July 16, 1946 — February 23, 2024

Susan Vaughan Henry, died peacefully on February 23, 2024. She was born July 16, 1946, in Farmville, VA, to Anne Cocks Vaughan and Dr. Robert C. Vaughan.

Susan ("Memama" to her grandkids) spent a year working in New York City after she graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 1968, inspiring her kids to seek their own adventures. She and her husband, Marshall, were happily married for 54 years and settled in Chester, VA where they raised their family. A beloved teacher for 28 years at C.C. Wells Elementary, she taught both 3rd and 5th grades. An active member and leader of her community, Susan was a member of the Junior Women's Club of Chester, Delta Kappa Gamma, Tuckahoe Women's Club, Garden Club, Investment Club, and Book Club just to name a few. She was also a member of the Chester United Methodist Church where she served in many roles, including the Stephen Ministries. She was an amazing listener and friend to so many.

Susan loved to travel. Sandbridge Beach held a special place in her heart and she vacationed there every summer and Thanksgiving. Additional favorites were southern Africa, which she fell in love with, and St. Thomas, where she honeymooned and celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. Susan was also an avid gardener. A true plant whisperer, she used her garden cuttings to make beautiful arrangements.

Susan is survived by her husband, James Marshall Henry III; brother, Hugh Vaughan (Carolyn); son, Jay Henry (Emily); daughter, Anne Mann (Kelly); and grandchildren, Bo, Lauren, Darcy and Bridget. She was preceded in death by her parents; much loved step-mother, Doris Johnson Vaughan; and brother, Robin Vaughan (Ellen). In her last days she still enjoyed humming along to "New York, New York" and would give a laugh or a smile to those who loved her.

A celebration of life service, with reception following, will be held at Chester United Methodist Church (12132 Percival St, Chester, VA 23831), on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 1pm. Donations may be made to the Chester United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
