Thomas Richard Smith, Sr.

Thomas Richard Smith, Sr., 89, of Hopewell, VA, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, May 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Ruth Ange Smith; son, Joseph W. Smith; brothers, J.D. Smith, H.E. "Poodle" Smith, James Lloyd Taylor; and his granddaughter, Melissa Martin. T.R. was one of a kind, known for his friendly nature, mischievous sense of humor, and constant willingness to lend a helping hand to others. Alta and T.R.'s home was always a welcoming place to all, filled with warmth, infectious laughter and love. He was a loving husband and father, grandfather, a millwright, construction manager, and noted friend to the community. He had a gift as a peacemaker, counselor, and leader of men. T.R. proudly served in the US Army, was a member of the American Legion, and a charter member of the Hopewell Moose Lodge. He is survived by his brother, Samuel Smith; and children, Wanda Witherspoon (Dixon), Thomas R. Smith, Jr. (Becky), Larry Smith (Mertees), Kyle Smith; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W Broadway Avenue, from 6pm-8pm, Friday, May 19, 2023. A funeral will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11am, at the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ, 601 Cameron Ave, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Interment will follow at Appomattox Cemetery, 703 N 21st Ave, Hopewell, VA 23860. In his honor, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ.
