Thomas Lloyd Kirtley, Sr. was born in Salmon, Idaho, November 16, 1918. Died, August 31, 2008. He grew up in Sunnyvale, California, where he graduated from San Jose State College. After receiving his masterâ??s degree in Chemical Engineering from California Institute of Technology, he served his country during World War II, making black powder for Hercules Powder Company. After the war, he moved with Hercules to Hopewell, Virginia, where he was active in the community and a member, deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. In 2007, he and his wife, Jean, came to Trinity Oaks retirement community in Salisbury, North Carolina to be near their son, Tom, Jr. Mr. Kirtley is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Eugene (Jean) Chappel Kirtley, his sister, Mary Kirtley McCreath of San Jose, CA, son Thomas Lloyd Kirtley, Jr. MD and wife, Dorothy Richardson Kirtley, son Frank Chappel Kirtley, five grandsons, Stephen and fiancé, Airi, Aaron and his wife Michelle, Nathan, Marcus and his wife, Jessica, and David Kirtley , one granddaughter, Roseanne Kirtley, and two great grandsons, Ethan and Philip He is also survived by step-granddaughters, Alison Sugg and her fiancé, Ross, Laura Byrd and her husband, Greg, and Jennifer Hope Sugg-Florez and husband, Kamilo. A remarkable man; an example of a life well lived and loved. The family will greet friends at 12:00 noon prior to a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia. Burial will follow at Appomattox Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, North Carolina and J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Hopewell, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity close to your heart in Tomâ??s name.
