Sergeant Thomas Matthew ?Tom Tom? Thomas, U. S. Army, age 29, died Thursday, November 17, 2005 while working in Iraq. Born at Fort Hood, TX, he grew up in Germany and Chester, and was presently a resident of El Paso, TX. Sergeant Thomas served with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment which qualified him for the difficult work that he was doing in Iraq. Since his discharge from the U. S. Army, he was working as a Security Specialist with Cochise Consultancy, a company which provides security to contractors working under government contracts in Iraq. He was on his second assignment in Iraq when he was killed by a roadside bomb. He understood the danger involved with the work that he was doing but was willing to sacrifice his life if necessary because he knew that he would be with his Lord and Savior. Sergeant Thomas was recently recalled to active duty by the U. S. Army and was scheduled to report for duty upon completion of his commitment to Cochise Consultancy. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Denver and Margaret Short of Chapmanville, WV. He is survived by his parents, Major Thomas E. Thomas, U. S. Army (Retired) and Brenda Short Thomas of Chester; paternal grandparents, Rodney and Jean Thomas of Murray City, OH; an aunt, Katy Ojeda and husband, Joe of Chapmanville, WV; cousins, Jody, Danny, and Chris Ojeda; many special friends including his dear friend and mentor, Mike Blankenship and family of Richmond, and Eric Rose presently working in Iraq and his father, Jeff Rose of Flint, MI, Chad Sims and others too numerous to mention. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Chad O?Kelly and to Steve Scales for their assistance in bringing ?Tom Tom? home and alerting his friends of the funeral arrangements. A funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 PM Monday, November 28, 2005 at Calvary Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, VA with the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment with military honors will take place at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 29, at Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper, VA.
