Thornton Hurt Elmore, "Billy," died on November 28, 2022, surrounded by his family and wife of 65 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thornton Hurt, Sr. and Marjorie Hardy Elmore,
of Blackstone and McKenney, VA; and brother, Spencer Hardy Elmore. He is survived by his wife, Alice Epes Elmore; sons, Thornton Hurt Elmore III (Donna) and Edward Epes Elmore (Carol); grandsons, Thornton Hurt Elmore IV, and Jason Edward Elmore (Megan); granddaughters, Morgan Tuttle Elmore, and Jessica Elmore McManus (Kaleb); three great-grandsons, Logan Elmore, Everett Elmore, and Kameron McManus; and a beloved cousin, Harriet Hardy Robinson.
Born March 8, 1935, Billy was an exceptional athlete throughout his life, lettering in three sports at Blackstone High School, and received scholarship at VMI, lettering in varsity football. He was an avid golfer at Country Club of Petersburg, Princess Anne CC VA Beach, Duck Woods CC OBX, NC, and Heritage Oaks CC Sarasota, FL. He belonged to several fishing clubs and loved pulling his crab pots. His passion for a quail hunt was renowned.
He was educated at Virginia Military Institute and VCU School of Medicine. Billy served the surrounding community with his dentistry, in Waverly, VA, for forty-five years. The dedication to his patients was heartfelt.
We will miss his "belly" laugh that exploded the room; his drive for excellence in any undertaking; the way his eyes lit up when his great-grandsons appeared; his affinity for cocktail hour; and the love and devotion that he had for his patients, family, and friends. We are grateful for our time with him and for the difference he made in our lives.
A celebration of life will be held on January 14, 2023, at 1:00 PM, at the Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 200 Church St., Blackstone, VA, with a reception to follow at historic Schwartz Tavern, 111 Tavern St., Blackstone, VA.
