Thurlow Virlin Cargill

Thurlow V. “John” Cargill, 93, of North Prince George, Virginia passed away on Monday, May 1, 2017 surrounded by his children and caregivers.
John was born April 16, 1924, in West Plains, Missouri, son of the late Samuel and Bessie (Downing) Cargill. He was the husband of Rose (Griffo) Cargill. They were married for 46 years before her passing in 1999.
He is preceded in death by four sisters, Lucille Duke, Lorraine (Harvey) Todnem, Ada (Ben) Tekiele, and Wilma (Archie) Willard; three brothers, Everett (Claudine), Curtis (Evelyn), and Sam Jr. “Bud”.
John left Missouri to serve in World War II and retired from the Army after 20 years of service. He then worked and retired as Curator from the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee.
He was the loving father of Michael T. (Kathleen), Randy V. (Patricia), Wanda A. (Keith) Shornak and Raymond G. (Georgette); dear grandfather of Michelle (Travis) Cryer, Michael D. (Melissa), Sara (Luke) Fillman, Sam, Nicholas, and Tony; dear great-grandfather of 9; and beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2017 at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 820 W. Broadway, Hopewell, VA. A graveside service will be held, 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 in Appomattox Cemetery, Hopewell, VA.
