Toye Ellen Owens

Toye Ellen Owens, 95, of Hopewell, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Born in Riner, VA on March 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Pearl Jarrels Reed. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, James “Early” Burnett; her second husband, John Henry “Shorty” Owens; two sisters, Roxie Mae Akers and husband, Curgless, and Elsie Altizer and husband, Kenneth; and brother, Everett Reed. Toye made her home in Haysi, VA from 1949 until 1986. There she and her husband, “Shorty” owned a small family grocery store, Owens Trading Post, located at the mouth of Greenbrier. Toye will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her son, James “Jim” Burnett of Hopewell; daughter, Tammy Potts and husband, Herbert (“Herbie”) of Hopewell; five grandchildren, April Margeret Fuller Toney and husband, Jason of Richmond, Rusty Burnett and wife Carrie of Martinsburg, WV, Rebecca Young of Hopewell, Jimmy Barkman of Owensboro, KY, and Michael Barkman of Owings, MD; eleven great-grandchildren, Kevin Barkman and wife, Patience of Hopewell, Mackenzie Leigh Glasscock of Hopewell, Michaela Marshall and Lauren Ware both of Urbanna, VA, Megan Burnett, Christopher Collins and Shandi Collins all of Maryland, and James Keith Burnett, Marcus Burnett, Emily Burnett and Aiden Burnett all of Martinsburg, WV; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom she loved so much. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Charity Baptist Church, 4716 Ruffin Road, Prince George, VA 23875. A luncheon will be held at the church following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Pharis Cemetery, 5156 Riner Rd., Riner, VA 21419.
