Truman Smith

Sergeant Major Truman Smith, U.S. Army (Ret.), 84, of Disputanta, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Born in Lawley, Alabama, he was the son of the late Freeman Smith and Zula Cochran Smith. He was also preceded in death by seven siblings; and son-in-law, Baki Ugurlu.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Susanna Ubel Smith; children, Anette Smith, and Erika Ugurlu; grandchildren, Yasemin Bayrak and husband, Lewent, and Kevin Ugurlu; great-grandchildren, Berkay Bayrak and Berkan Bayrak; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith proudly served his country in the U.S Army, retiring after 30 years of service as Sergeant Major. He went on to work for Standard Motor Products in Disputanta and retired there after many years. He was an avid tennis player, enjoyed watching sci-fi movies, and had a strong interest in astronomy. Mr. Smith loved his family especially his grandchildren. He was a man of God and will be dearly missed.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., February 10, 2023, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow with full military honors at Southlawn Memorial Park. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
