V. J. Coberly, Jr., 91, died on February 27 in Roswell, Georgia. He was born in Petersburg on October 16, 1924 and was the only son of Vergil J. Coberly, Sr., a native of Elkins, West Virginia who resided in Petersburg for 45 years after military service in World War I; and Alice Dolan Coberly, a native of Petersburg. Mr. Coberly, Jr. was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Petersburg, a three-year veteran of World War II and a graduate of the University of Virginia.
He spent his working career as a member of the U. S. Office of Personal Management and was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia where he became Assistant Director of the Directorate of Combat Development in the U. S. Army Quartermaster School. During his career with the Army he wrote extensively for professional military magazines and Pentagon reports. He was also the author of a novel that sold two hundred thousand copies.
He is survived by his wife Imogene Cowan Coberly, of Roswell, Georgia; three children, V. Joseph Coberly, III, Daniel Thomas Coberly, both of Atlanta, Georgia, and Amy Coberly Miller, of Roswell; a daughter-in-law, Tanya Richard, wife of Joseph; a son-in-law, Dr. Randall W. Miller; two grandchildren, Seth Coberly Miller and Morgan Ann Miller; five nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Rosalie Coberly Sommer, of Racine, Wisconsin and Alice Coberly Hall, of Atlanta, Georgia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Brian Capuano at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
