Velma Mitchell Hayes

Velma Mitchell Hayes, 80 of Chester, VA, died August 20, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born and raised in Pulaski, VA she was the daughter of the late Claribel Mitchell Taylor and Hobert Mitchell; and was also preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Harry Hayes; a brother, Stuart Wayne Mitchell; and a sister, Wanda Robertson. Velma and her brother opened Klara’s Kitchun in March 1983 the first location was Harrowgate Road, and in 1992 sold the restaurant to their sister, second location was the Water Tower Shopping Center on Route 10. Velma enjoyed traveling, cooking, music, sewing and gardening.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Baker Holdsworth, Sheila Baker Coffield, and husband Matthew; sister, Joan Mitchell; a brother, Jeff Mitchell; one granddaughter, Brooke Culliton; a grandson, Brandon Culliton and his wife Brien; great-granddaughters, Ruby Ann Culliton and PepperMae Culliton; step-daughter, Donna Finkernagel, and her husband Mark; and there four children Kyle, Taylor, Hannah and Luke Finkernagel; stepdaughter, Dianna Young, and her two children T.J. and Sarah Young; and a stepson, Sean Hayes.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association, 4600 Cox Rd.
