Mrs. Vera Alpha Owen Lilly, 94, of Hopewell, died Sunday, November 7, 2010, at Brighter Living Assisted Living. She was born in Carroll County, Virginia. She was an active member of the Hopewell community, having served as a Sunday School teacher and other capacities in her church, First United Methodist Church, as well as being a member of the Eastern Star, a Gray Lady at Fort Lee and John Randolph Hospitals, and heading up numerous charitable drives and serving on various Boards. She continued to tutor children in the Hopewell School system into her 90â??s. Vera loved her golf and was twice Ladies Champion at Jordan Point Country Club, where she was a founding member.
Mrs. Lilly was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond P. and Naomi Surratt Owen, her husband, Daniel E. Lilly, a son, Sherman O. Halstead, Sr., a brother, Kermit Owen, and a son-in-law, Richard McCool. She is survived by a son, Harry Edward Lilly, Sr. & wife Phyllis, of Prince George, a daughter, Sue Lilly McCool, of Henrico; daughter-in-law Delia Halstead of Colonial Heights; grandchildren Allen James of Hopewell, Sherman Halstead, Jr. of Colonial Heights, Theresa Liebler & husband Lance, of Ashburn, VA, Vera Barber & husband Michael, of Henrico, Guy Edward Lilly of Chester, Harry Edward Lilly, Jr. of Chesterfield, Joseph Lilly & wife Barbara, of Olney, MD; and great-grandchildren Heather Liebler of Ashburn, VA, T. J. Liebler, of Ashburn, VA, Anthony Barber, US Army, Afghanistan, Morgan Lilly of Chester, Evan Gill of Haymarket, VA, Connor Lilly of Olney, MD, Ethan Lilly of Olney, MD, Hayden Lilly, of Gloucester, VA.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 10, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. in the Hopewell chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in First United Methodist Church, Hopewell, with The Rev. Dr. Michael Browder, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester. Contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 502 West Broadway, Hopewell, VA 23860.
