Vernon Hayes Clarke, 85, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at his home near Wakefield, VA. Born in Surry County he was a son of the late Joseph Alexander Clarke and Essie King Clarke. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 62 years, Hylah Harvell Clarke.
Mr. Clarke was a retired farmer, a member of Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club for 53 years, a charter member of the Farmers Hunt Club, and was on the Board of Trustees of the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad.
He is also survived by a son, Dennis H. Clarke and wife, Debra; grandchildren, Sandra Lindsey and husband, Pryor, Tim Clarke and wife, Christen, and Jennifer Clarke; great-grandchildren, Savannah Lindsey, Isabel Lindsey, Shea Lindsey, Dawson Clarke, Joe Clarke, and Lauren Clarke; and a sister, Dorothy Kibler and husband, Jimmy.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with the Rev. Roy Drake officiating. Interment will follow in Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening, 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Mr. Clarke may be made to a volunteer fire department or volunteer rescue squad of your choice.
