Virginia Bruce Lanier Hughes, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2012. Ms. Hughes was born on April 27, 1937, in Millen, Georgia, to the late Jefferson Bruce Lanier and Ara Mae Clifton Lanier. She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Robert Ernest Hughes, and her children William Charles Bishop, III, of Hopewell, VA, Melody Dianna Keen and husband Michel of Dinwiddie County, VA, Ginny Richelle Cenveny and husband Robert of Hopewell, VA, Rachael Ara Hughes of Brooklyn, NY, and Joshua Bruce Ernest Hughes of Petersburg, VA; and grandchildren Cassandra, Brandon, Stephanie, Yvonne, Rebecca, Jeremy and Landon; and many nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and devoted friends. She was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Richard Bland College and attended Virginia State University. Her employment included the Hopewell Department of Social Services. Mrs. Hughes was a professional songwriter and performer, and a political, environmental and animal rights activist. Ms. Hughes leaves an enduring legacy to her family, the arts, and societal concerns. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or the Environmental Defense League Fund. A memorial service will be held for the family.
