Virginia Minach Moncol

October 15, 1929 — October 10, 2024

The quiet force that was Virginia Minach Moncol, 94, prior resident of Surry, VA, died peacefully at home in Richmond on October 10, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on October 15, 1929, to Samuel and Anna Minach in Prince George, VA. She was proud of her first-generation status in the local Slovak community, as well as learning and perfecting the Queen's English once she began elementary school. This drove her lifelong requirement for those around her to use proper grammar and to spell correctly.

For decades she was a legal secretary and eventually also became a Magistrate for the Commonwealth of Virginia. This latter role allowed her to utilize her talents as a counselor and gentle disciplinarian, encouraging those around her to become their best selves.

Virginia was a faithful member of Surry United Methodist Church and the Business and Professional Women's Club. Her passions included cooking for family and friends, baking Slovak pastries and sewing for her two daughters. Except for spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her greatest joy came from watching UVA Men's Basketball, even when her vision became limited.

She was predeceased by her father Samuel Minach, mother and stepfather Anna and George Kvetko, her husband of 68 years Edward Paul Moncol, brother Robert Minach and granddaughter Laura E. Kolesar. Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth M. Stowe (Wilford) and Paulette L. Moncol (Melodie); grandson, Bradley E. Kolesar (Jenna); great grandchildren, Michael Garrett, Avery Kolesar and Nolan Kolesar. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m., at the Chester Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the service at 2:00 P.M., Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Merchant's Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George. The family thanks Juanita Merrick, Lorraine Semidey, Samuel Laryea, Felecia Williams, and the team of professionals at Covenant Homecare. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Surry United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 118, Surry, VA 23883 or to the charity of your choice.
