Wanda Rachel Thompson Land, age 76, of Petersburg, Virginia, died Friday, July 8, 2005 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir, N.C. She was born October 21, 1928 in Caldwell County, N.C. to the late Greene Barlow and Vera Hass Thompson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant son, Ralph Greene Land and a daughter-in-law, Linda Land. Mrs. Land was a wife and mother who followed her husband throughout his military career. She served as an organist for military chapels for over 40 years and was Protestant Director of Education at Fort Lee for a number of years. Mrs. Land was the secretary at First Baptist Church of Petersburg for 33 years where she was also a member. She was also Contact worker in Petersburg and an active member of Downtown Churches United for 30 years. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Clifton E. Land, Sr. of the home; two sons, C. Edward Land, Jr. of Norfolk and Jacques Carre-Land and wife, Marie Pierre of Nantes, France; three sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Conley and Mrs. Agnes Scroggs both of Lenoir, N.C. and Mrs. Bobbie Jean Reese and husband, Robert of Knoxville, TN.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence and Nelle Land of Newport News; three grandsons, Britt Edward Land of Norfolk and Josselin Carre and wife, Myriam and Florian Carre all of France and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Southlawn Memorial Park, Petersburg, Va. With a memorial service following at 12:00 Noon at First Baptist Church, 235 West Washington St., Petersburg, Va. Conducted by Rev. Kathy S. Shereda, Dr. Rand Forder, Dr. Ector Lee Hamrick and Dr. Andrew J. White. The family will greet friends following the memorial service at the church.
