William H. Goodwyn, Jr.

December 8, 1935 — November 5, 2018

William (Bill) H. Goodwyn, Jr. of Chester, Virginia, passed peacefully into life eternal on November 5, 2018. He was the son of the late W. Hugh and Louise Ruffin Goodwyn and preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth G. Tyner.

He was survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara Rossiter Goodwyn, daughters, Laurie G. Fields, husband, Lynwood Fields; Traci G. Jones, husband Dr. David Jones; Ginni Goodwyn and significant other, Bobby Doyon; and Betsy G. Baker, husband, Clay Baker. Surviving also are his pride and joy grandchildren: Logan and Luke Fields, Caroline and Annie Jones , Zak Goodwyn and numerous cousins.

Bill was retired from over 30 years with LandAmerica Title Insurance Company (formerly Lawyers Title) where he held the position of Executive Vice President. He was a graduate of Thomas Dale High School and Hampden-Sydney College where he earned a BA degree in Economics. While in high school he excelled in all sports, earning the title of Best All Around Athlete his sophomore and senior years. He also was a class president, SCA president and Prom King. While at Hampden-Sydney he was president of his class, president of PiKA fraternity and was a member of the football team.

He was active in numerous civic and business organizations being Past president of Sales and Marketing of Richmond, Past president of Chester Jaycees and Chester Lions Club, Associate Member of the Year of the Birmingham Home Builders Association, Past member of Richmond Metro Chamber Board, and Richmond Metro YMCA Board. Though his achievements were numerous perhaps the thing that made him most proud was his part in securing land for the current Chester YMCA and negotiating the purchase of land with the landowners.

Bill served on the Chesterfield County School Board for four years, being Vice-Chairman his 4th year.
He was included in the 1971 issue of Outstanding Young Men of America and was a member of the Thomas Dale High School Athletics Ring of Champions. He was a lifelong member of the Chester United Methodist Church where he served as chairman and member of numerous leadership committees.

He was a “people person” and always the first to welcome a new neighbor or church member...and as a dear friend called him... a “classic gentleman”. He was an avid hunter and loved a round of “for fun” golf. In his new Springdale home his favorite pasttime was Bingo every Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon....enjoyed more when he won. Another sport he enjoyed was horseback riding and was the year-end Virginia Quarterhorse Association Champion in Novice Amateur Western Pleasure plus winning numerous circuit awards.

Although he was busy with his many church/civic accomplishments his main love was being with his family. He especially enjoyed his trips to Ships Watch in Duck and his condo at the Eastern Shore.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 10 at 4:00 pm. at the Chester United Methodist Church in Chester, Virginia, with a reception following.
