William Albert Gwaltney, 87, a long-time resident & landowner of Surry County, died January 17, 2006 at Haven House Hospice Center, Atlanta, Georgia.
He was born in Surry County on November 18, 1918, the youngest child of William Albert and Edna (Deissner) Gwaltney. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Gwaltney was a graduate of John Marshall High School in Richmond, Va., and served in the 361st. Air Service Group of the U. S. Army during WW II. He was active in the American Legion, the Surry Volunteer Fire Department and the Blackwater Sportsman's Club for many years. He was a welder at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, retiring from there in 1981.
He is survived by his widow: Elizabeth (Berryman) Gwaltney, of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters: Anne W. Gwaltney of Brooklyn, New York and Lynn G.(John E., III) Varner, of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren: Elizabeth G. and Joseph R.
