William Carlton Holland of Hopewell, departed this life, Sunday, February 13, 2005 after several years of declining health. Mr. Holland was born in Petersburg, to James E. and Elva J. Holland, on November 10, 1923. Mr. Holland was a life-long resident of Hopewell. He graduated from Hopewell High School where he was named to the 1942 Virginia State High School All-State football team. He served with the US Army Air Corps in World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater and on Tinian in the Marianna Islands. Mr. Holland retired from the Dupont deNemours Corporation and from the Hopewell Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. He was a former past president of the Hopewell Optimist Club, an advisor to the Police Explorers, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ellen H. Holland, his son and daughter-in-law Carlton E. Holland and Jeannie M. Holland of Chesterfield, his daughter, Mary Ellen Holland of Spokane, Washington, many nieces and nephews. Among numerous special survivors are his grand-daughter by marriage, Leona Martin, her husband, Dean, and their children, Alicia and Evan. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM. February 16, 2005 at Wesley United Methodist Church. with the Rev. Teresa Keezel, pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends following the church service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives are asked to make contributions to the National Kidney Foundation of Virginia 5001 W. Broad St. Suite 217 Richmond, Va. 23230.
